  Studied the time course of graphic, phonological, and semantic activation in the recognition of high frequency Chinese characters. Ss were 120 university students (Exp 1 and 2) in Beijing Normal University, China. The priming-target pairs were in 4 types of priming: graphic, phonological, semantic priming, and nonpriming, and the durations between priming and target were at stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) 43 ms, 57 ms, 85 ms, and 145 ms respectively. In Exp 1, the time course was investigated in a semantic priming category judgment where Ss judged whether the target was an animal name. In Exp 2, the time course was investigated in a phonological priming category judgment where Ss judged whether the target was pronounced "yi." The time course of activation was studied in an analysis of the priming effects at different SOA conditions with multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The results showed that the order of accessing lexical information of high frequency Chinese characters is graphic, semantic, and phonological. The results suggest that the meaning of the characters can be accessed directly by the activation of graphic information; and that phonology may be activated automatically after the access of the meaning.
